Operant Conditioning @ work environment

  • Application specialists work outside office and provides service to end users of analyzers in the hospital.
  • Each of us have a productline to take care of and assignment hospitals and customers.
  • We are NOT obliged to time in or out from Sundays- Thursdays , but it is expected that all analyzers must be in excellent working condition and customers are satisfied with the service and level of support given.
  • Before the end of financial year, Quality Manager receives service feedback from all customers and Employees will be given performance appraisal.

Depending on performance , salary increment is given plus bonus . This is a form of positive reinforcement  is effective in enhancing work performance but it is open to intrigues and animosity between staffs due to  doubts of inequality on the assessment process.

time inRecently we had a change in management and the Manager has given an email that ALL staff must come to the office and clock in and out after each working day. This Negative re enforcement removed the flexibility of our schedule in order to take control of staff schedule in order to make sure that during working hours all  designated tasks are fulfilled at par to customer’s satisfaction and also improving visibility of staff in the sites.

punishLate submission of  service reports from application specialists  affects the payment scheme. In this scenario, late salary will be given to those who submit reports late. Punishment is given to reduce the tardiness and irresponsibility behavior. Although based on statistics, this form of operant conditioning has indeed lessened tardiness , still there is unpredictability of the outcome. Plus the fact that it cultivates negative reactions – like hatred, widrawal , anxiety to staff.

Although, re enforcers and punishmens are effective perse depending on situations, it is sad that these forms of Operant Conditioning is insufficient in achieving a person’s full potential.

One can achieve goals by inspiring, motivating and encouraging initiative. The vision and mission of a company must be shared and cultivate the genuine love for work and service. One must  motivate their followers by raising their concerns from basic needs to achievement and self-fulfillment; by moving them beyond self-interest to concerns of the group, project or organization. They bring charisma, inspiration, intellectual stimulation, and individualized considerations. They address an individual’s self-worth and capitalize on an individual’s unique capability.
